A1 - practice drafting grids with a variety of line weights on blank 4" x 6" index cards
A2 - developing initial field studies by adding black canson paper to fields where previously marked with darkest lineweights.
A3 - creating relationships between the canson paper figures and the field. all yellow trace paper zones had to border both shapes on at least one side.
A4 - now additional fields of trace paper were held. they did not need to touch previously made figures or trace. playing with overlapping areas and blank space.
A5 - taking the 2D canson and trace paper studies and making them 3D. selected 4 of my favorite cards to depict on museum board. trace paper was shown as an additional flat layer on top of the field and canson paper figures were built in 3D picking up on major gridlines that flowed through them. then, i was asked to photograph the models in order to highlight their potential shadows.
A6 - a progression of my four selected grids compiled on one large paper with various trace layers on top. the original image helped play with lineweights and shading with architectural pencils (i was really proud of how this one came out, minimal smudging and clear lineweights) the trace layers were asked to explore further relationships that could be made with the models to play with space form and layering.
A7 - a 3D interpretation of my trace on top of large field composition. now, trace layers are double stacked on top of the field and the canson figures stay casting deep shadows on the field.
A8 - a series of exploded axonometrics of my figure ground studies. this was the first assignment where i felt like an architectural drafter. played with lineweights, angles, and what is seen/unseen.
A9- a selection of my favorite works from this series of studies. final model shows trace layers uniquely on 3D model. final figure ground study shows a stronger interpretation of grayscale values and lineweights than shown previously.
A10 -final series of studies using another layer of trace paper. highlighting the negative space / opportunistic space in each field.
A11 - godfrey hall, clemson university
tasked with drawing the graphic communications building on campus without using any measurement tools (ruler, tape measure) aside from the human body and proportions.
A12 - a study of major and minor gridlines on godfrey hall. major is on the left, minor is on the right.
A13 - canson paper studies showing rhythm and repetition in godfrey hall's facade. organized between window locations, extruded vertical elements, and major horizontal spaces.
A14 - layering initial figure ground studies of the godfrey facade with trace on top.
A15 - taking my two favorite studies into the 3D realm. drafted the facade on museum board and extruded canson and trace elements into the 3D dimensions.
A16 - figure ground studies with grayscale sketching values. i was really proud of these after making them.
A17 - the 2D layered model on the left I was super proud of post construction. the axon on the right hand side was one of the harder drawings to organize and conceptualize because of the building's length and size of the paper given. overall, i think my pencil values are solid.
A18 - study models showing different elements i picked up in the last figure ground study of godfrey that were simplified to help with the next model.
A19 - this exploded axon and 3D model of godfrey hall was one of my biggest challenges my first semester. the model I think was stronger than the drawing. the lineweights of the axon were strong and all the lines were much straighter than the previous axo. the model has some of the cleanest lines i modeled up to this point in school.
A20, A21 - the final part of this study of godfrey hall was a 3D perspective drawing. I chose to couple copic markers with watercolor for this drawing coming up the large hill from tiger blvd that highlights the prominent central tower.
my first final pinup. i had to redraw my strongest images onto a singular poster board with my perspective at the bottom. i loved how all this work came out and was/am super proud of it.
